The brutal killing of Ummulkhairi, a teacher, wife and mother of four, in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, has sparked renewed concerns about the growing menace of mob justice in Nigeria, with the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) calling for a comprehensive investigation and swift prosecution of all those involved.

In a statement, MPAC condemned the lynching, describing it as a tragic failure of justice and a disturbing reflection of the breakdown of lawful dispute resolution mechanisms in some communities.

According to the organisation, Ummulkhairi was accused of child kidnapping and subsequently attacked by a mob despite reportedly being in lawful custody.

The circumstances surrounding her death have generated public debate, particularly over claims and counterclaims regarding the actions of security personnel before the incident occurred.

MPAC’s Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, said the incident represents more than the loss of a single life, arguing that it raises serious questions about public confidence in the justice system and the ability of state institutions to protect citizens accused of crimes.

The organisation maintained that allegations alone should never serve as grounds for punishment, insisting that every individual is entitled to due process under the law.

While acknowledging official denials of wrongdoing by law enforcement authorities, MPAC noted that conflicting public accounts have created concerns that require independent scrutiny.

The group called for investigators to establish a clear timeline of events, including how the victim allegedly moved from official custody into the hands of the mob.

Observers say the tragedy highlights a recurring challenge across parts of Nigeria, where rumours, misinformation and public anger have sometimes led to violent attacks on suspected offenders before formal investigations can be completed.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly warned that mob justice undermines the rule of law, often resulting in innocent people being harmed or killed based on unverified claims.

For MPAC, the killing of Ummulkhairi is part of a broader pattern in which fear, misinformation and distrust of institutions combine to create conditions for extrajudicial violence.

“The legitimacy of the state is measured by its ability to protect the innocent, even when they are accused or misunderstood,” the organisation stated.

MPAC therefore, called for the immediate identification, arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in the lynching;
