British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party, bringing his premiership to an unexpected end less than two years after taking office.

Starmer made the announcement on Monday during an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, saying every decision he made while in office was driven by his commitment to serving the United Kingdom.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.

The outgoing prime minister became visibly emotional as he addressed the nation, marking the close of a turbulent tenure that was characterised by a series of policy reversals and waning public support.

He confirmed that the Labour Party will begin the process of electing a new leader in July, adding that he will continue serving as prime minister until his successor is chosen.

According to Starmer, the leadership transition is expected to be concluded by September, ensuring continuity in government while the party completes its internal selection process.

His resignation comes amid growing political pressure and declining approval ratings, opening a new chapter for the Labour Party as it prepares to choose a new leader ahead of future political challenges.
