United Nigeria Airlines has strengthened its fleet with the unveiling of two newly acquired Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft, a move aimed at boosting operational capacity, expanding route connectivity, and supporting the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The aircraft, bearing registration numbers 5N-CFC and 5N-CFB, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2), Lagos, on June 13, 2026, and were officially unveiled on Thursday during a ceremony attended by key government officials, traditional rulers, aviation stakeholders, and industry leaders.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, described the acquisition as a strategic step in the airline’s expansion programme.
According to him, the two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft are the first batch of six aircraft acquired from Southwest Airlines, with four additional aircraft expected to join the fleet in the coming months.
Aircraft Named After National Icons
In a symbolic gesture celebrating Nigeria’s cultural heritage and leadership, the airline named one of the aircraft after renowned novelist and literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe, author of the globally acclaimed Things Fall Apart.
The second aircraft was dedicated to HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, in recognition of his contributions to traditional leadership, national development, and cultural preservation.
The event attracted prominent personalities, including Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, who served as the chief guest, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, Air Peace Chairman Dr. Allen Onyema, and several aviation stakeholders.
Expanding Capacity and Connectivity
The Boeing 737-800NG aircraft are widely regarded for their fuel efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort. Their addition is expected to enable United Nigeria Airlines to increase flight frequencies on existing domestic routes while positioning the carrier for regional expansion.

Professor Okonkwo said the airline remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient air transport services while contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.
He added that the company is also preparing for future long-haul operations, supported by previously secured Airbus A330 aircraft.

Governor Alex Otti commended the airline’s management for investing in Nigeria’s aviation sector, describing the fleet expansion as a positive development for economic growth and job creation.
He expressed optimism that ongoing infrastructure development in Abia State, including plans for an upgraded international airport, could create new opportunities for airline operations and connectivity.
Minister Festus Keyamo also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing reforms that will make aircraft acquisition and leasing more accessible to indigenous carriers.

Founded in 2021, United Nigeria Airlines has steadily expanded its operations across the country and remains one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous carriers.
Industry analysts believe the latest fleet addition will strengthen the airline’s competitive position within the domestic market and support its ambition to become a major player in regional aviation.
With more aircraft expected before the end of the year, the airline is poised to improve passenger experience, expand route networks, and further contribute to the development of Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
