The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Akaninyene Udo for allegedly spreading false security information on social media, creating panic in the state.

Udo, popularly known online as “AK Philo,” was accused of sharing a viral post that warned residents of an alleged impending bandit attack in Eket and neighbouring communities.
The message, which featured a threatening statement alongside an image of an armed individual, reportedly sparked fear and anxiety among residents.
According to the police, the suspect, who hails from Esit Eket Local Government Area, deliberately circulated the misleading information despite the absence of any verified security threat.
Authorities said the action was particularly concerning given the heightened public sensitivity to security issues across the country.
Confirming the arrest in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed that the command has been monitoring individuals who use digital platforms to disseminate unverified or fabricated security alerts capable of creating unnecessary panic.
She reassured residents that there is currently no credible threat to peace and security in Akwa Ibom State, emphasizing that the state remains calm, secure, and under effective surveillance by security agencies.
DSP John further revealed that investigations into the matter have been concluded and that the suspect will soon be arraigned in court.

She added that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved in spreading the false information.
The police warned members of the public against sharing fake news or unverified security reports, stressing that such actions are criminal offences punishable under the law.
Residents were urged to verify sensitive information through official sources before sharing it and to promptly report genuine security concerns to the nearest police station or designated emergency lines.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state and called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.
