Summary of Key Points

  • The Kano State Police Command arrested 345 suspected criminals during a security operation conducted between June 5 and June 7, 2026.
  • The operation covered all 44 local government areas and targeted criminal hideouts, black spots, and drug distribution centres.
  • Police recovered 270 dangerous weapons, including knives, cutlasses, clubs, and other offensive items.
  • Large quantities of suspected illicit drugs, including cannabis sativa, exol tablets, and “suck and die”, were seized.
  • Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori said the success was driven by Operation Kukan Kura and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), reaffirming the command’s commitment to combating crime across the state.

Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this on Monday, while briefing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

According to him, the operation, carried out between June 5 and June 7, 2026, was part of ongoing efforts to curb thuggery, drug trafficking and other violent crimes in the state.

Bakori said the crackdown targeted identified criminal hideouts, black spots and drug distribution centres based on credible intelligence and reports from members of the public.

He stated that those arrested are suspected thugs, drug dealers and individuals found in possession of offensive weapons, adding that all the suspects were currently under investigation and would be charged to court where evidence established their culpability.

The police commissioner disclosed that the operation led to the recovery of 270 dangerous weapons, including knives, cutlasses, clubs and other implements commonly used in violent attacks.

He also revealed that operatives seized substantial quantities of suspected illicit substances, including cannabis sativa, exol tablets and a dangerous cocktail popularly referred to as “suck and die.”

“The seizures have significantly reduced the capacity of criminal elements to inflict harm on innocent citizens and threaten public peace,” he said.

Bakori attributed the success of the operation to the sustained implementation of ‘Operation Kukan Kura’ and the activities of the recently established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

He explained that ‘Operation Kukan Kura’ had strengthened visibility policing, enhanced response to distress calls and denied criminal elements the opportunity to operate freely in identified flashpoints across the state.

The police commissioner added that the VCRU had improved the command’s intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities, enabling swift intervention against violent crimes and gang-related activities.

Reaffirming the command’s resolve to sustain the fight against crime, Bakori warned criminals to abandon unlawful activities, stressing that Kano State would no longer serve as a safe haven for criminal operations.
