The Delta State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on illicit drug trafficking, arresting three suspected drug traffickers and recovering large quantities of hard drugs in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.

Key Highlights:

  • Delta State Police Command arrested 3 suspected drug traffickers in separate operations.
  • A truck carrying large quantities of hard drugs was intercepted in Asaba.
  • Drugs recovered included Tramadol, Codeine, Rohypnol, and MDMA.
  • Two other suspects were arrested in a drug distribution raid in Owa-Alero.
  • Police say investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, disclosed that operatives of the Special Enquiry Unit intercepted a truck conveying a large consignment of prohibited substances at the First Niger Bridge Head in Asaba.

According to the statement, the operation took place on June 3, 2026, when officers on stop-and-search duty intercepted a Mercedes truck with registration number KRV 837 ZN driven by 47-year-old Obinna Nwosu from Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Although the suspect claimed he was transporting plumbing materials, a thorough search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered 13,000 sachets of 100mg Tramadol, 100 sachets of 225mg Tramadol, 100 sachets of Swinol, 300 sachets of Rohypnol, 60 sachets of Codeine Phosphate tablets, and 100 tablets of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as “Molly.”

Police said the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue to identify other individuals connected to the illicit shipment.

In a separate operation conducted on the same day, operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad (CAVS) raided a suspected drug distribution centre in Alegbo Community, Owa-Alero, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

During the raid, two suspects identified as Henry Edward and Okwudili Kingsley were arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly operating a drug distribution network within the community. Recovered exhibits included five gallons of fermented cannabis mixture popularly known as “Monkey Tail,” alongside quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs.

The suspects and recovered exhibits remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Reacting to the successful operations, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the officers involved for their professionalism and dedication.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and other organised crimes, stressing that illicit drug abuse remains a major driver of cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

The commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies to support crime prevention and detection across the state. This version is formatted in a standard newspaper style suitable for publication.
