Key Points

  • NNS Delta organized a two-day sporting event in Warri to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
  • The event brought together personnel from various military and paramilitary agencies to strengthen cooperation and inter-agency synergy.
  • Activities included football matches, volleyball competitions, and tug-of-war contests involving both security personnel and children from the host community.
  • Commander Shehu Mohammed Tasiu said sports promote teamwork, discipline, resilience, and mutual trust—qualities vital for security operations.
  • The event underscored the importance of collaboration among security agencies in maintaining peace and addressing security challenges.

The event, held in Warri, brought together personnel from the military and paramilitary services, including the Army, Air Force, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Customs, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Department of State Services (DSS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Immigration Service, and Correctional Service.

Activities commenced with a novelty football match involving children from the host community, followed by a mixed-agency volleyball competition. The second day featured female football matches, tug-of-war contests, and a football match involving personnel from participating security agencies.

Declaring the event open, the Commander of NNS Delta, Shehu Mohammed Tasiu, said sports provide an effective platform for promoting teamwork, unity, and stronger institutional relationships among security agencies.

According to him, sports not only improve physical and mental well-being but also instill discipline, resilience, confidence, and cooperation—qualities essential for effective security operations.

“These games teach teamwork and cooperation. On the football pitch, no child wins alone. On the volleyball court, no agency scores alone. You must pass, cover, communicate and trust each other. Those are the same values the Nigerian Navy lives by every day at sea,” he said.

Commodore Tasiu noted that the inclusion of children in the anniversary celebrations was deliberate, stressing that the future of the Navy depends on the younger generation.

He encouraged participants and members of the public to embrace regular physical exercise, describing it as vital for maintaining good health and reducing stress.

Speaking on the second day of the event, the naval commander explained that the sporting activities were designed to improve planning, coordination, and mutual understanding among security agencies.

He emphasized that in joint security operations, there are no individual winners or losers because all agencies work toward a common objective of ensuring peace and security.

“The matches are intended to demonstrate that any team that plans, prepares, and works effectively together will succeed. That is the reality of our operations in the field,” he stated.

The sporting event formed part of nationwide activities commemorating the Nigerian Navy’s 70 years of service, highlighting the importance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing contemporary security challenges across the country.
