Lionel Messi has sparked fresh injury concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after asking to be substituted during Inter Miami CF’s Major League Soccer clash against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
The Argentine captain was replaced in the 73rd minute after appearing to clutch the back of his left leg during the encounter played in wet conditions in Miami.
Despite the scare, Messi was seen walking normally as he headed straight down the tunnel following his substitution.
Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos later suggested the decision to take off the 38-year-old was precautionary, citing fatigue and the difficult playing surface.
Key Highlights:
- Lionel Messi was substituted in the 73rd minute of Inter Miami’s MLS match against the Philadelphia Union after appearing to hold the back of his left leg, raising fresh injury concerns.
- The 38-year-old was seen walking normally after leaving the pitch and headed straight to the tunnel, suggesting the issue may not be serious.
- Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos said the substitution was precautionary, explaining that Messi was fatigued and the wet, heavy playing surface increased the risk of injury.
- The incident comes just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Messi is widely expected to represent Argentina, although he has not formally confirmed his participation.
- If selected, Messi would make a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance; however, his fitness remains a concern due to recurring hamstring issues that have affected him since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023.
“As far as I know, we don’t have a medical report yet, but he was really fatigued,” Hoyos said after the match.
“He was tired, the pitch was heavy and when there is any doubt, the best approach is not to take risks.”
Messi is widely expected to feature for Argentina national football team at the upcoming World Cup despite not officially confirming his participation.
