Four persons have been confirmed dead and six others rescued in Kano after a Volkswagen Golf vehicle plunged into the Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State following a tyre burst.

Spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, noted that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening along the Kano-Roni Road.

He explained that the state fire service office in Danbatta received a distress call at about 7:10 p.m. from a resident, identified as Suleman, reporting that a Volkswagen Golf vehicle with no visible registration number had crashed into Tomas Dam.

“The vehicle, travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State, crashed at Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area. The incident involved 10 persons,” the statement said.

It added that firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station swiftly responded to the emergency and rescued all the occupants from the submerged vehicle.

The agency, however, said four of the victims were pulled out unconscious and later confirmed dead at the hospital.

The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, aged about 35, and Fatima Danlami, aged about 40, while the identities of two other victims were yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

“All victims were conveyed to Danbatta General Hospital for medical attention and necessary procedures,” the statement added.

The fire service said preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by a burst tyre, which led to the driver losing control before the vehicle plunged into the dam.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged motorists to drive carefully and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles to avoid avoidable accidents.
