The Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs is partnering with Bridge Connect Africa Initiative (BCAI) to translate the state’s women economic empowerment policy into the Hausa Language to enhance grassroots awareness and implementation of the policy.

Speaking during a post-launch stakeholder engagement and dissemination meeting organised by BCAI, the ministry’s Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Yakubu Muhammad, said the translation was aimed at ensuring women in rural and hard-to-reach communities understood the policy and actively participate in its implementation.

He explained that the forum was convened to review the Hausa-translated version of the policy document and allow stakeholders to make necessary corrections before final publication.

According to him, translating the document into Hausa would make it accessible beyond English-speaking audiences, particularly for women engaged in different economic activities across rural communities.

“Kano State is predominantly Hausa and Fulani speaking. We want to ensure that the document is not only for people who can read and write English, but also accessible to those in rural and hard-to-reach areas in their local language,” he said.

Muhammad added that the translated document would help women better understand government plans aimed at increasing female participation in key sectors of the economy.

Also speaking, project lead of the WAVES Project at Bridge Connect Africa Initiative, Bako Nathan Musa, said the engagement was organised to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of the policy and strengthen coordination toward effective implementation.

He explained that the WAVES Project, meaning Women Against Violence Empowered Through Sustainability, was designed to empower women economically and reduce vulnerabilities associated with economic dependence.

Musa said BCAI simplified the original 120-page policy document into a 10 to 15-page version containing key messages in simpler language for easy understanding.

He disclosed that the organisation planned to publish 200 copies in the first phase for key implementation stakeholders while also making digital copies available for wider circulation.

According to him, the simplified policy document would also promote accountability by enabling citizens and stakeholders to monitor government commitments and implementation targets under the policy up to 2029.

The forum also focused on clarifying stakeholder roles, strengthening commitment to implementation and supporting coordinated dissemination of the policy across Kano State.
