As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State has elected a new set of executives to steer the affairs of the party.

The executives emerged during a well-attended delegates’ congress held in Asaba, the state capital.

The exercise, which drew hundreds of delegates, party chieftains, elders, and stakeholders, was conducted peacefully, with participants maintaining order throughout the process.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security personnel were present to monitor the exercise. All candidates were returned unopposed through a voice vote.

Chairman of the electoral committee, Engineer Kingsley Okafor, said the election followed the formal dissolution of the party’s caretaker committee, as well as a motion duly moved and seconded by registered members for the congress to hold.

Party leaders and stakeholders who addressed the gathering reaffirmed their commitment to reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape, citing insecurity, economic hardship, and corruption as key challenges requiring urgent attention.

A former Delta State governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, Ken Pela, described the influx of prominent political figures into the NDC as more than a routine political development, but a realignment driven by shared values and purpose.

He noted that the reported defection of Peter Obi to the party had further strengthened its structure and signaled renewed hope for both Nigeria and Delta State.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Delta State Chairman of the NDC, Chief Angiamaowei Richman Oyindoubra, described the congress as a success and a significant step toward national progress.
“At this point, we have built the Nigeria Democratic Congress in unity and without rancour. This election places a responsibility on us, and we are committed to justifying the confidence reposed in us by working towards victory in the 2027 general elections,” he said.

Reiterating the party’s mission, Pela emphasized that the NDC is focused on serving Nigerians with a resolve to addressing the prevailing socio-economic challenges, including rising fuel prices and widespread hardship.

He added that many citizens are aligning with the party in a bid to defend their votes and confront the nation’s security and economic issues.

Other speakers at the event expressed optimism about the party’s emergence and pledged their readiness to work toward its success in the forthcoming elections.
