A long-awaited trial date has finally been set in the case involving former domestic workers of ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan, bringing a potential turning point after years of delays, controversy, and public outcry.

The 15 workers, who have been in detention since 2019, are accused of stealing jewellery reportedly valued at hundreds of millions of naira from the former First Lady.

Despite the case reaching the stage where the defendants were to open their defence, repeated adjournments, absence of the presiding judge, and failure to schedule hearings stalled progress for over six years.

The court has now fixed May 22, for the continuation of trial proceedings, a move believed to be influenced by renewed media scrutiny and sustained pressure from the public.

Family members of the accused persons have consistently challenged the prosecution’s case, alleging that key confessions were obtained under duress.

Some of the defendants reportedly told the court they were subjected to torture during interrogation.

Relatives have also accused officials in Bayelsa State of interfering in the judicial process to keep the defendants in prolonged custody, suggesting that political considerations ahead of the 2027 elections may be a factor.

The prolonged detention has had devastating consequences. One of the defendants, Sahabi Liman, died in custody after his health deteriorated.

According to his family, he had previously been granted bail for medical treatment and showed signs of recovery before his condition worsened.

Several of the remaining defendants are reportedly battling serious health issues, with limited access to proper medical care.

The upcoming trial date is expected to test the resilience of Nigeria’s judicial system and could mark a critical step toward resolving a case that has drawn widespread concern over justice, human rights, and due process.
