A former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has lamented what he described as decades of underperformance in governance and infrastructure in Taraba State.

Speaking over the weekend at a reception organised in his honour by loyalists and political associates, Mamman painted a stark picture of a state still struggling to meet basic development expectations more than 30 years after its creation.

“Since the creation of Taraba State 34 years ago, we have remained lagging behind in the delivery of good governance.

“This stagnation has led to a lack of infrastructural development that our people desperately need,” he said, drawing applause from a large and energized crowd.

What began as a ceremonial gathering quickly evolved into a subtle political rally, with attendees openly pledging support amid growing speculation that Mamman is positioning himself for the 2027 governorship race.

In his address, the former minister struck a tone of cautious ambition.

While stopping short of a formal declaration, he hinted at broader consultations and strategic engagement across the state.

“This visit is just the beginning,” Mamman told supporters. “There will be wider consultations as we determine the next steps.”

He also issued a pointed appeal to voters, urging them to reject divisive politics.

“As we approach 2027, we must prioritise competence and credibility over ethnic and religious considerations,” he said.

Mamman outlined what he termed a vision of “purposeful governance,” promising a comprehensive plan to overhaul infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

According to him, the goal is to reposition Taraba as a competitive player among Nigeria’s more developed states, while ensuring governance remains people-focused.

Political analysts say the remarks, and the growing frequency of Mamman’s public engagements, suggest an early attempt to shape public perception and consolidate support ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested governorship election.

For many observers, the weekend’s event may mark the unofficial start of the 2027 political season in Taraba State.
