Plans by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have reportedly fallen through after negotiations between both sides broke down.

Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State, Samaila Burga, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Saturday, citing disagreements over conditions and power-sharing arrangements as the main reasons for the collapse.

According to Burga, the PDP leadership in the state refused to rush into a deal that could weaken its political standing, despite earlier considerations to move into the APC with its full structure.

He also claimed that some governors who had previously defected to the APC were now regretting their decisions due to a loss of political control, referencing developments in states such as Plateau, Adamawa, Rivers, Kogi, and Kano.

Burga described the terms offered by the APC as “cancerous” and unacceptable, stressing that the party would not compromise its influence in Bauchi State.

Following the failed talks, he said the PDP remains open to exploring other political options, including possible alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which had earlier shown interest.

However, sources indicate that Gov. Mohammed may be hesitant about the ADC option due to his strained relationship with Atiku Abubakar, alongside reported internal challenges within the party.

With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the political future of Bauchi State remains uncertain as the governor and his allies continue consultations on their next move.
