The Okun Development Association (ODA) has expressed strong support for the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan, as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while urging Nigerians and political stakeholders to exercise restraint in their reactions.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the group praised President Bola Tinubu for what it described as a merit-based appointment, adding that Prof. Amupitan’s selection reflects competence, character, and integrity.
According to the association, Prof. Amupitan’s track record in academia and public service demonstrates discipline, institutional respect, and leadership capacity needed to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
The group said his appointment is a source of pride for Okunland in Kogi State and for Nigerians who believe in merit-driven public service.
“Prof. Joash Amupitan personifies honesty, hard work, humility, and service above self,” the statement read, adding that his experience positions him to lead INEC effectively and fairly.
The association also appealed for calm among political actors and citizens, urging that grievances be addressed through legal and institutional channels rather than public confrontation.
It stressed that while scrutiny of the electoral body is expected, stakeholders should allow the new INEC leadership “the calm and institutional space” needed to carry out its duties.
