The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old suspect, Fode Bassey, over alleged involvement in cultism, armed robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms.
The arrest followed a swift investigation into a complaint filed on March 29, 2026, by a victim identified as Edim, who was attacked by a four-man gang in Calabar.
According to police reports, the victim was ambushed by the gang armed with cutlasses and a firearm. During the attack, he sustained injuries to his left hand and was threatened before the assailants fled with valuables.
Items reportedly stolen include a Delight solar battery valued at N185,000 and N326,000 in cash, bringing the total loss to about N500,000.

Police detectives tracked and arrested Bassey on April 1, 2026. In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed that the suspect has confessed to the crime.
“The suspect confessed and identified himself and his accomplices as members of the Vikings Confraternity,” the PPRO said, adding that a locally fabricated pistol was recovered from him at the time of arrest.
The suspect remains in custody as efforts intensify to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who are still at large.
The command has called on residents to provide credible information that could assist in tracking down the fleeing suspects.
