A tragic boat accident in Sokoto State has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 150 suspected bandits after a vessel capsized in the Sabon Gida area, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in northwestern Nigeria.

Local sources said the group was attempting to cross a river when the boat overturned under unclear circumstances. Eyewitness accounts suggest that many of the occupants were swept away by strong currents, leaving little chance of survival.

The incident first came to light through security analyst Saga Zola, who disclosed the development on his verified X account, noting that the casualty figure could mark one of the deadliest single incidents involving suspected bandits in recent times.

Although there has been no official confirmation from security agencies, preliminary reports indicate that the boat may have been overloaded. The scale of the movement has also sparked questions about how such a large number of individuals were able to operate and travel within the area without detection.

Residents of surrounding communities expressed shock at the development, with many raising concerns about the continued presence and mobility of armed groups in the region.

Security experts say the tragedy highlights the risks tied to criminal networks, noting that such groups often face dangerous conditions that can lead to fatal outcomes even in the absence of direct military engagement.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue a formal statement, but efforts are said to be underway to verify the incident and determine its broader security implications.
