The Nigerian government has recorded a major milestone in its drive to expand electricity access, as an indigenous energy firm secured ₦7.4 billion financing to deploy a 7-megawatt mini-grid across underserved communities in Ebonyi State.
The development was confirmed in a statement by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which described the project as a significant step toward bridging Nigeria’s energy deficit through renewable solutions.
According to the agency, the financing forms part of a broader Memorandum of Understanding valued at ₦100 billion with a Nigerian bank to roll out renewable energy infrastructure across eight key locations in the state.
The initiative falls under the government’s Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up programme, aimed at improving electricity supply and reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
Communities set to benefit from the mini-grid deployment include Okposi, Mebiokpa and Ohaozara in Ohaozara Local Government Area, as well as Ebunwana in Edda LGA. The project will also extend to Unwana and Afikpo in Afikpo Local Government Area, alongside Iboko in Izzi LGA.

Managing Director of the REA, Abba Aliyu, said the rapid progress of the project demonstrates the agency’s commitment to partnerships that deliver measurable impact for citizens.
He noted that the initiative reflects how strategic collaboration between government and private sector players can accelerate infrastructure delivery and improve access to reliable electricity in rural communities.
The project is expected to enhance economic activities, support small businesses and improve living standards in the benefiting areas, as Nigeria continues efforts to expand clean and sustainable energy solutions nationwide.
