Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has submitted a video before a Federal High Court in Abuja, allegedly showing operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) assisting drug traffickers at Nigerian airports.
Kyari is being tried alongside officers of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), including ACP Sunday Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspectors Simon Agirigba and John Nuhu, as well as ASP John Umoru, who remains at large.
The charges relate to alleged drug-related offences.
During proceedings, Kyari’s defence counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), presented a 27-minute video recorded by the police on January 20, 2022, in which one of the traffickers, Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, admitted to knowingly carrying cocaine and claimed it was not the first time.
The video also alleges that NDLEA officials would often ignore suspicious items or fail to properly search traffickers, effectively allowing them to operate with impunity.
Inspector El-John Nwoke, a witness from the Force Headquarters, testified that the convicts had been arrested at Enugu Airport with 21.55kg of cocaine.

According to the witness, the traffickers told the police they had operated in the drug trade under the cover of NDLEA officials and were surprised when arrested.
The NDLEA had previously arraigned Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Ezenwanne in 2022 for similar offences; both were later convicted after pleading guilty.
Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the case to May 20 and 21, 2026 for further hearing.
Kyari was recently discharged and acquitted alongside his two brothers in a separate case of false asset declaration, but he continues to face this ongoing trial related to drug offences.
