The University of Lagos has rejected the actions of its Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter after the union initiated a strike without adhering to proper procedures.

On Tuesday, ASUU UNILAG instructed lecturers to stop working starting Wednesday due to unpaid salaries for January and February.

Chairman of ASUU UNILAG, Prof. Idou Keinde, mentioned that lecturers have not received their full salaries, which include the consolidated salary structure for academics, the consolidated academic tools allowance, and the professorial allowance.

“We will not return to work until we receive our full salaries,” Prof. Keinde stated.

Responding, UNILAG’s Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, announced on Wednesday that the university will continue discussions with the ASUU leadership to resolve the issues, particularly regarding the unpaid consolidated academic teaching allowances.

“The management of the University of Lagos has acknowledged reports in the media regarding the ASUU UNILAG chapter’s congress on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, where members were directed to halt their services over claims of unpaid consolidated academic teaching allowances.

“Management notes that the proper procedures were not followed in this declaration.

“However, in its commitment to the welfare of both staff and students, the university is actively engaging with the ASUU executive to address all concerns,” the statement indicated.

Negotiations are ongoing as both parties strive to find a resolution, with the university dedicated to addressing the issues raised by its staff.
