The Independent Newspapers Publishers Association of Rivers State (RIVPA) has called for a transparent and peaceful conduct of the upcoming bye-elections in the state.

The group in a press statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday jointly signed by the Caretaker Chairman, Mr Ifeanyi Evans Osi, and the Caretaker Secretary, Mr Augustine Tanee, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and all security agencies involved in the forthcoming bye-elections specifically in the Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies to remain professional.

RIVPA emphasised the need to ensure that all political parties, candidates, and the electorates are treated fairly and without bias.

The association further called on political actors, stakeholders, and concerned groups across the state to remain peaceful and law-abiding both during and after the polls scheduled for 21 February.

RIVPA commended traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and well-meaning individuals currently cooperating with INEC to ensure a successful electoral process in the state.

Addressing its members, RIVPA specifically advised media practitioners to remain steadfast in the discharge of their duties. The association urged journalists to uphold the core ethics of the profession founded on accuracy, fairness, and balanced reporting while covering the election.

The association reminded all journalists to avoid sensationalism that could incite negative reactions.
