The Coalition of Northern Groups has raised concerns over what it described as a pattern of irresponsible conduct by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warning that his actions could undermine democratic governance and institutional integrity in the country.
The group, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Charanchi, accused the minister of repeatedly exceeding the limits of his constitutional responsibilities and interfering in matters outside his official mandate.
The coalition said the most troubling example of Wike’s alleged overreach is the claimed manipulation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.
Charanchi said the issues raised by the group were made public to safeguard accountability and democratic principles.
“Wike’s tenure has been marked by a troubling pattern of behaviour, including unwarranted encroachments into areas beyond his jurisdiction,” the statement read.
“As a minister, he is expected to respect the principles of federalism and the autonomy of state governments, but his actions suggest otherwise.”
The coalition further alleged that Wike had interfered in political party affairs and attempted to intimidate opponents, actions it said were incompatible with democratic norms.
The CNG questioned the independence of the EFCC, alleging that the commission’s response to comments made by Gov. Mohammed appeared biased and politically motivated.
“The EFCC’s dismissal of the governor’s claims as ‘wild’ and ‘far-fetched’ raises concerns about the neutrality of the commission and fuels the perception that it is being used against political opponents,” the group stated.
The coalition warned that no individual holds absolute political power and that excesses, if unchecked, could have consequences.

It also urged President Bola Tinubu to closely monitor developments, warning that the alleged actions of the FCT minister could negatively affect the credibility of the administration.
Charanchi said: “If these actions are left unchecked, they could undermine the integrity of the president’s administration and weaken democratic principles.”
The group also accused Wike of compromising democratic institutions during his tenure as Rivers State governor, alleging interference with the police, judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as meddling in opposition party affairs.
The CNG added that there is growing confusion over the centre of political power in the country, a situation it said could lead to instability if not addressed.
The coalition called on the EFCC to strictly adhere to its mandate of fighting financial crimes without political influence, while urging civil society groups, political parties, and citizens to remain vigilant in defending democracy, electoral integrity, and the rule of law.
“The political landscape of Nigeria must be protected from the excesses of individuals who seek to manipulate institutions for personal gain,” the statement concluded.
