The federal government has issued a firm condemnation of the attempted coup in Benin Republic, describing it as a dangerous attack on democratic governance in West Africa. The statement came hours after unrest broke out near President Patrice Talon’s residence, where gunfire was heard as armoured vehicles moved in to secure the presidential precinct.

A group identifying itself as the Military Committee for Refoundation had announced the removal of President Talon and all political office holders, declaring that national institutions had been dissolved. The Beninese presidency later confirmed that Talon was safe and that loyal forces had regained control of the situation.

In its response on Sunday, Nigeria said it received reports of the incident with grave concern. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Nigeria commended the swift action of Beninese authorities in protecting constitutional order and preventing the coup plotters from destabilising the country.

The statement noted that the failed takeover was a direct assault on democracy and the collective will of the Beninese people, who have shown continuous commitment to peaceful political transitions. Nigeria also praised the professionalism of Benin’s security forces, saying their prompt intervention was vital in defending state institutions and securing the president.

The government reiterated that unconstitutional changes of government remain an unacceptable step backward for the region and a threat to the democratic progress made by West African states. It urged ECOWAS member countries and the international community to stand together in condemning the act, while upholding the AU Charter on Democracy and the ECOWAS Protocol on Good Governance.

Nigeria assured Benin of its full support and pledged continued cooperation to strengthen democratic stability, promote peace and advance development across the region.
