The Delta State House of Assembly has pledged to conduct a thorough review of the proposed landlord and tenant bill to ensure it addresses contemporary housing challenges, while safeguarding the rights of landlords, tenants, and agents.

The assurance was given by the Chairman of the House Joint Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Girl-Child Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Support Services, and the Committee on Urban Renewal, Bridget Anyafulu, during a public hearing on the bill.

Declaring the session open, Anyafulu stated that the proposed legislation seeks to establish a clear and balanced legal framework for tenancy in Delta State.

She explained that the bill would repeal the outdated Rent Control and Recovery Law of 1977 to align with present-day realities in the housing sector.

Stakeholders who made presentations at the public hearing include representatives from the Customary Court of Appeal, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Urban and Regional Planning, the Association of Tenants and Agents, and the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors.

They called for specific amendments to strengthen the proposed law and ensure fairness to all parties.

Also in attendance were the House Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, Oloye Pereotu, Ferguson Onwo, Austine Uroye, Mathew Omonade, and Bernard Odior, alongside officials from relevant ministries and housing professionals from within and outside Asaba.
