Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has explained his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, citing the President’s interventions in the development of the state, including approval for the second phase of the Nembe-Brass Road and waivers for imported gas turbines.

Diri spoke during the State Working Committee Retreat of the City Boy Movement (CBM) in Yenagoa, where he commended the socio-political group for advocating a shift towards knowledge-based politics and urged its members to reject violence.
The governor noted that although the CBM had been vocal in its support for Tinubu’s re-election, its members should work closely with the structures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at both state and national levels.
Diri Urges Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu
Diri described the City Boy Movement as a strategic political group and advised its members to move beyond social media advocacy by strengthening their presence at the grassroots.
He said the re-election of President Tinubu would require sustained mobilisation and active participation by supporters.
“We all want our President to come back but it will not happen by chance. We all have to play our roles not just on social media but at the grassroots. It is our duty to go from door to door.”
The governor also commended what he described as a gradual shift away from the use of violence and intimidation in Nigerian politics.
He said political engagement should increasingly be driven by knowledge, ideas and democratic participation.
Diri Cites Nembe-Brass Road, Gas Turbine Waivers
Explaining his support for Tinubu, Diri said the President had supported Bayelsa’s development by responding to requests concerning major infrastructure and energy projects.
“President Tinubu has supported the development of Bayelsa State and deserves the support of the people.”
He specifically cited Tinubu’s approval of the second phase of the Nembe-Brass Road project and the granting of waivers for gas turbines imported for the state.
Diri said the interventions demonstrated the President’s responsiveness to the needs of Bayelsa State.
Governor Backs Restructuring, State Policing
Diri also reiterated his advocacy for the restructuring of Nigeria, arguing that democracy can thrive when justice and fairness are strengthened.
He said he believed Tinubu was capable of advancing the restructuring agenda, citing the President’s moves on issues such as state policing.
The governor said Bayelsa wanted greater control over its resources while contributing taxes to the Federal Government.
“For us in Bayelsa, we want to control our resources and pay tax to the centre and I believe that if we must achieve that, this President is one we must follow.”
Diri urged Nigerians to allow Tinubu to complete his second term, describing him as stable and capable.
Bayelsa APC Promises 2027 Mobilisation
Bayelsa State APC Chairman, Hon. Warman Ogoriba, thanked Diri for his support and said the party had chosen a strategic approach rather than engaging in unnecessary political confrontations.
Ogoriba said the APC had strong candidates and would mobilise across the state to secure victory in the 2027 elections.

City Boy Movement Targets Youth Votes
In his welcome address, Bayelsa State Director of the City Boy Movement, High Chief Osomkime Blankson, said the retreat was organised to strategise for Tinubu’s re-election.
Blankson described the President as deserving of a second term based on what he described as his performance and achievements.
The Director-General of the City Boy Movement, Mr Francis Shoga, also described Tinubu as a courageous leader who had taken difficult decisions which he said would ultimately benefit Nigerians.
Shoga said the movement would take the achievements of the Tinubu administration to the grassroots.
He expressed optimism that Bayelsa would contribute significantly to the movement’s projected 10 million youth votes for Tinubu in 2027.
