A group of former governors from Nigeria’s Southeast has endorsed the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, while also unveiling a new forum to support incumbent governors and provide strategic guidance on regional and national issues.
The resolution was reached at a meeting held at the Presidential Lodge, Government House, Enugu, where several former governors across the zone converged to chart a common political direction.
Those in attendance included former governors such as David Umahi, Martins Elechi, Sullivan Chime, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Chris Ngige, representing various Southeast states.
Reading the communiqué, Umahi said the newly formed Southeast Former Governors’ Forum would serve as a non-partisan platform for collaboration, open to all past governors of the region regardless of political affiliation.
He explained that the forum’s primary objective is to support serving governors in delivering good governance and addressing key developmental challenges in the Southeast.
“The forum is established to provide advisory support and strengthen governance across the Southeast. We are committed to working with incumbent governors in areas such as infrastructure, security, and economic empowerment,” Umahi stated.

The group commended the performance of current governors in the region, particularly in infrastructure development and security, while also praising President Tinubu for appointing Southeast indigenes into key national positions and for ongoing federal projects in the zone.
In a major political declaration, the forum aligned itself with serving Southeast governors in backing Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
“We fully support the re-election of Mr. President and commend the unity of Southeast governors on this position,” Umahi said.
He noted that some former governors were absent due to medical trips and prior engagements but expressed confidence that broader participation would be achieved in subsequent meetings.
The forum also announced plans to engage directly with the Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum, Peter Mbah, to explore areas of cooperation and formally present its agenda.
Umahi emphasised that the initiative is designed to complement, not compete with, the authority of serving governors, describing it as a support structure built on experience and collective regional interest.
