Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic extra-time final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, securing their second World Cup title and bringing an emotional end to Lionel Messi’s World Cup career.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after Argentina had been reduced to 10 men following Enzo Fernández’s late red card. Spain’s triumph capped an extraordinary campaign that saw La Roja concede just one goal throughout the tournament while extending their unbeaten run to 38 international matches.

Spain’s success was further underlined by an impressive 38-match unbeaten run, the longest in men’s international football history.

Captain Rodri was named the tournament’s best player after controlling Spain’s midfield throughout the competition and received the prestigious Golden Ball award.

France striker Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals, becoming the first player to claim the award twice and surpassing Lionel Messi’s overall World Cup goals tally.

In the third-place playoff, England, under manager Thomas Tuchel, defeated France 6-4 in one of the most entertaining bronze-medal matches in World Cup history to secure their best finish since winning the tournament in 1966.

The tournament also featured a star-studded halftime entertainment lineup, with performances by Burna Boy, Shakira, Justin Bieber, The PS22 Chorus, BTS, Madonna, Coldplay, and Gustavo Dudamel.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup also signalled a changing of the guard, with veterans such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Manuel Neuer making way for emerging stars including Lamine Yamal, Désiré Doué, Pau Cubarsí, Gilberto Mora, Nico O’Reilly, and Unai Simón, who are expected to shape the future of world football.
