The Borno State government, as observed by The Trumpet, has scaled down its Independence Day celebrations.

The action, as revealed by our findings, was due to the devastating floods that recently ravaged Maiduguri metropolis and the surrounding local government councils of the state

In a statement made available to journalists in the state on Monday, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, explained the decision, emphasizing the need for collective reflection and solidarity during this difficult period.

The flood which struck on September 10, was observed to have caused widespread destruction, displacing hundreds of families and damaging crucial infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, roads, and bridges.

The state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, in his independent message, extended his sympathies to those affected, urging the public to unite in prayer for the state’s recovery and the nation as a whole.

“While we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day, we must focus on supporting and standing in solidarity with those impacted by the flood disaster.

“Let us take this time to pray for recovery and strength, not only for Borno State but for all of Nigeria,” the governor said.

He also reassured residents that the government is prioritizing the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure and will ensure that affected families receive necessary relief and support, stating that efforts are being coordinated with the disbursement committee to expedite aid distribution across the state.
