Consequent upon attacks on Ukraine by Russia , the Nigerian Youth Parliament, has called on the Federal Government to walk the talk by expediting action on planned evacuation of Nigerian citizens from Ukraine, Russia, and other neighbouring counties where the spill over of attacks may spread to.

Speaker of the Parliament, Rt. Hon. Azeezat Yishawu in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, said the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia constitutes major concerns for the Parliamentarians especially for students in these zones of war.

The body noted that as conflicts escalate with recent attacks within the region, governments of counties across the world are prioritizing the evacuation of their citizens from the area, to forestall harm to their citizens.

It added that currently, a number of Nigerians have fled the region due to the growing rate of insecurity and fear among them.

She said the call by the Parliament is to ensure the safety of all Nigerians who dwell in these countries for the reasons of education, business, tourism, etc.

“Nigerian Youth Parliament is concerned about the safety of Nigerians in these troubled areas, and is willing to give its assistance, where needed, to ensure the speedy evacuation of all Nigerians back home by the Federal Government.

“In the pursuit of education, business, tourism, etc., no Nigerian should be exposed to danger on foreign soil without the government making valiant efforts to bring them back home safely.

“We advise the Federal Government and major stakeholders to rapidly expedite action on evacuation of Nigerians from these areas.

“Nigeria has a large population of students in these areas, and it has become necessary for them all to be evacuated.

“Although, the Nigerian government through the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) last week issued an advisory to Nigerians resident in Ukraine to remain calm and security conscious, however, due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, it has become expediently important to evacuate all Nigerians now.

“We believe that the model use for the evacuation of Nigerians from other counties at the peak of Covid-19 pandemic could be adopted in this instance as well.

“We are thus asking for the evacuation of Nigerians from these areas which are the nucleus of the conflict as these areas now pose an overall hostile environment to Nigerians there.

“Many Nigerian are in these areas whose borders have now been shut-down, their airspaces are also being monitored, so, it calls for concern and it is important for the Nigerian Government to quickly conclude its arrangements to evacuate its citizens”, her statement read.
