The South-South Zone of the Nigerian Youth Organisation (NYO) has urged the federal government to reactivate the seaports in the Niger Delta.
The youth body made the appeal in a press release signed by the NYO South-South Chairman, Dr. Gometi Crested, and Secretary, Grace Effiong, respectively, and made available to newsmen in Warri, Delta State.
The organisation said the reactivation of the seaports will facilitate the smooth operation of seaports, mitigate hardship, and promote economic stability in the region.
They raised concerns about the prevailing hardship in the region and the lack of confidence in the federal government’s development agencies because of perceived politicisation and self-serving leadership.
The organisation highlighted the adverse effects of the non-functional seaports in the region, including economic stagnation, unemployment, insecurity, and underdevelopment.
The NYO stated that despite being rich in oil and gas resources, the region remains one of the most underdeveloped in Nigeria.

It therefore called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to reactivate the seaports in the Niger Delta region to stimulate economic activities and alleviate poverty.
The youth body, however, urged the state governors and other political leaders in the Niger Delta region to reassess their leadership approach by prioritizing the welfare of the people and taking deliberate actions to alleviate the current hardship in the region.
