Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has announced a major relief package for Deltans evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, approving a ₦2 million grant for every affected family and monthly welfare payments to help them rebuild their lives.

Governor Oborevwori unveiled the intervention package on Friday during a reception for the returnees at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, the governor described the xenophobic attacks as a gross violation of human dignity, insisting that no one should suffer violence or discrimination because of nationality.
Under the approved package, every returnee will receive a ₦200,000 monthly stipend, while each affected family will receive ₦300,000 every month, beginning in August 2026 and continuing until the expiration of the governor’s first term on May 29, 2027.
To further support the victims, the governor directed that all returnees receive free medical screening at government-owned hospitals and instructed the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services to provide trauma counselling and psychosocial support.

Oborevwori also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for facilitating the safe evacuation of Nigerians caught up in the attacks.
He urged Deltans to embrace the returnees with compassion, assuring them that the unfortunate incident would not define their future while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting the welfare of all citizens.
Earlier, the Commissioner for the Bureau for Special Duties, Hon. Ejiro Etacherure, described the governor’s intervention as timely and compassionate, noting that all returnees had been properly identified and documented to ensure they receive the approved support.
He encouraged the victims to take advantage of the state’s empowerment and economic opportunities as they begin a new chapter.
Speaking on behalf of the returnees, Mr. Jacob Agbada expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori, describing the ₦2 million grant and monthly stipends as life-changing support that would help families recover from the losses suffered during the attacks.
