World Press Freedom Day: Gov. Okpebholo charges journalists to uphold high standards, ethical conduct

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has charged journalists practising in the state to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct in their pursuit of truth, contributing to a more informed and discerning citizenry.”

He gave the charge in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, in his message on the occasion of the 2025 World Press Freedom Day.

“On this important World Press Freedom Day, the Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, joins the global community in recognizing and celebrating the vital role of a free and independent press in fostering democracy, accountability, and societal progress.

“The administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo firmly believes that a vibrant and unfettered media is a cornerstone of a healthy and informed society.

“Journalists, as the watchdogs of truth and the voice of the voiceless, play a crucial role in holding those in power accountable on critical issues, and empowering citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions,” the statement stressed.

Gov. Okpebholo acknowledged the courage and dedication of journalists in Edo State and across the globe, who often work under challenging circumstances to bring vital information to the public.

“Their commitment to the principles of accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting is essential for maintaining public trust and strengthening the fabric of our communities.

“Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights that guarantee freedom of the press and expression,” Gov. Okpebholo added.

He said his administration recognizes that a free press is not merely a privilege, but a fundamental pillar of a democratic society.

The governor pledged to continue to foster an environment where journalists can operate without fear of intimidation or undue interference.

Also, the state government maintained that it values the partnership with the media in the collective pursuit of a better Edo State.

“Governor Monday Okpebholo recognizes the vital role the press plays in amplifying the voices of our people, scrutinizing government policies, and contributing to constructive dialogues.

“He remains open to engagements and collaboration with media professionals in the spirit of transparency and mutual respect,” the statement concluded.
