Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the resignation of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “a political embarrassment and a sad day for the party.”
Wike, who spoke during a live media chat with journalists in Abuja on Friday, said although he was not surprised by the development, he considered it a major embarrassment to the PDP leadership. He recalled that Governor Diri was the chairman of the party’s zoning committee and wondered why he would suddenly resign at such a crucial time.
According to the FCT Minister, whatever challenges the PDP was currently facing were not enough to warrant the kind of resignation Diri made. He said that during his own tenure as governor of Rivers State, he encountered severe political pressures from the then Buhari-led administration but chose to remain loyal to the PDP.
Wike accused the Buhari government of doing everything possible to destroy the PDP, including allegedly planting former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, as its national chairman to destabilize the party. He noted that despite those challenges, PDP governors at the time stood their ground and defended the party’s integrity.

Wike reaffirmed that he remains a member of the PDP, stressing that the party must do the right thing to reposition itself ahead of future elections.
Governor Diri’s resignation, announced on Wednesday, 14th October 2025, alongside the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP members of the state legislature, has intensified speculation about his imminent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
