The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has imposed a sweeping ban on all social activities beyond 6 p.m. in a dramatic move to restore safety on campus after the tragic killing of a businessman during a student event.
The announcement came through a statement issued by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, who confirmed that the university reached the decision in response to the September 12 incident in which Chiebonam Nweze, a well-known businessman popularly called Power-Autos, was fatally stabbed during a bonfire organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
According to the university, all social gatherings must now be held only in the daytime and under strict supervision by the University Security Unit. The management stressed that no event, regardless of its nature, will be permitted to continue past 6 p.m. on university grounds.

UNN expressed regret over the violence, noting that the bonfire night was hijacked by hoodlums from a nearby community who disrupted the event and sparked chaos that ended in tragedy. The administration assured students, staff, and parents that it is committed to taking every necessary measure to protect lives and maintain a safe learning environment.
The ban marks one of the strictest measures ever taken by the university against student activities and has already triggered debate among the campus community. While some students see the policy as harsh, others believe it is a necessary step to prevent further loss of life and restore order.
With the tragedy still fresh in memory, the university insists it will not compromise on security. The new regulation is expected to redefine campus life at UNN as the institution prioritizes safety over late-night social activities.
