The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Banku Obi, has performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 1,200-bed ultra-modern hostel, marking a major step toward easing accommodation challenges faced by students of the institution.
Speaking at the event, Professor Obi expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa (CON), for ensuring that the University of Calabar benefitted from the ongoing TETFund and private developers’ partnership initiative. She also commended Nigerians in the diaspora for their consistent contributions and unwavering commitment to advancing tertiary education in the country.
The Vice Chancellor described the project as a significant milestone that would transform student welfare on campus, noting that the hostel, when completed, will provide a more conducive living and learning environment. She lauded the Federal Government’s proactive efforts in strengthening the education sector through sustainable partnerships.
Professor Obi also praised members of the Nigerian diaspora who continue to invest in national development, describing their dedication as noble and worthy of emulation.

Dr. Familusi applauded the Unical Vice Chancellor for her visionary leadership and commitment to student welfare, describing her as an administrator passionate about the university’s growth. He also commended the institution’s Director of Physical Planning, Arc. James Onun Ikpi, for his dedication and hands-on supervision of the project.
According to him, the University of Calabar is one of nine universities selected to benefit from the first phase of the TETFund-PPP hostel development scheme. He further assured that the initial phase of the project, comprising 275 bed spaces, will be completed and ready for use within six months.
The ceremony was attended by members of the University’s Governing Council, principal officers, and members of the expanded management team.
