Two Ondo incumbent senators lose return bid

Senator Ayo Akinyelure, representing Ondo Central, and Nicholas Tofowomo, representing Ondo South in the National Assembly, have lost their return ticket to contest as candidates under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

Both Senator Akinyelure and Nicholas Tofowomo were defeated at the party primary which was held on Monday.

Senator Akinyelure was defeated by a legal practitioner, Ife Adedipe (SAN), while Senator Tofowomo lost his return ticket to the former deputy governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi. Ife Adedipe polled 82 votes to beat Senator Akinyelure who scored 58 votes; the former PDP Chairman in the state, Clement Faboyede with 57 votes, while Agboola Ajayi scored 78 votes to beat Tofowomo who polled 74 votes, Godday Erewa, 12 votes and Iroju Ogundeji 23 votes.

Senator Akinyelure Patrick Ayo, a two-term senator, an approved tax practitioner of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria; a Group Executive Chairman of the Allover Group, a microfinance lender, from 1994 to 2010 succeeded Senator Tayo Alasoadura and assumed office in June 2019.

However, Senator Tofowomo, who served as the Commissioner for Transport during the administration of former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, succeeded Yele Omoguwa and assumed office in June 2019 as well.

Speaking with newsmen after the election, the winners lauded the delegates and leadership of the party for a free and fair election. They urged other contestants to see their emergence as a victory for all of them, adding that the task ahead was huge.
