Nigeria has been ranked the most spammed country in Africa in the latest 2025 Spam and Fraud Report released by Truecaller.
According to the report, 51 percent of all unknown calls received by users in Nigeria this year were classified as spam or fraudulent, indicating that more than half of unfamiliar calls may be unwanted or potentially dangerous.
Globally, Nigeria placed eighth among the countries most affected by spam calls and led African nations ahead of South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Ethiopia.
The report identified Indonesia as the world’s most spammed country, with 79 percent of unknown calls marked as spam, followed by Chile at 70 percent. Other countries in the global top five include Vietnam, Brazil, and India.

Truecaller noted that Nigeria’s case stands out because a significant portion of the spam calls are linked to telecom and network operator promotions, which account for 35 percent of all spam calls recorded in the country — the highest level among African markets surveyed.
Telemarketing and promotional calls reportedly make up another 10 percent, while direct scam attempts account for approximately six percent.
The report warned that the growing overlap between legitimate telecom communication and fraudulent calls has made it increasingly difficult for users to identify genuine calls, exposing many Nigerians to higher risks of fraud or causing them to ignore important legitimate communication.
It also observed a similar telecom-related spam pattern in Brazil, suggesting that large developing telecom markets may be unintentionally contributing to the rising global spam call challenge.
