In a decisive and gallant offensive against terrorism, troops of the Nigerian Army’s Operation FASAN YAMA have successfully neutralised eight armed bandits during a heavy firefight in Kurfi, Katsina State. The operation, conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, 18 June 2025, is being hailed as a major success in the ongoing campaign against violent extremism and banditry in the North-West region.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, the confrontation occurred at approximately 5:00am along the Kurfi–Batsari road.

According to him, troops from the 17 Brigade, operating out of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kurfi, engaged a group of terrorists attempting to stage an attack in the area.

He stated that the encounter quickly escalated into a fierce and prolonged exchange of gunfire, with the Nigerian troops demonstrating superior firepower, tactical coordination, and resilience. “The terrorists suffered significant losses, with eight neutralised during the engagement,” the statement confirmed.

In the aftermath of the operation, the troops recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition from the defeated insurgents. Items retrieved include five AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines, and thirteen rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. These recoveries further degrade the operational capacity of terrorist groups operating within Katsina State and its environs.

Tragically, one soldier sustained injuries during the battle. He was promptly evacuated and is currently receiving medical attention at the 17 Brigade Medical Centre. Military authorities have confirmed that he is in stable condition, and the overall situation in the area remains calm and under control.

Major General Kangye commended the troops for their “bravery and professionalism” in the face of danger, noting that their actions once again confirm the Nigerian Armed Forces’ commitment and resilience to safeguarding national security and restoring peace to conflict-affected areas.

“The Defence Headquarters reassures Nigerians of our continued efforts to ensure the safety and security of all citizens. Operations are ongoing, and our troops remain vigilant and combat-ready,” the statement concluded.

This latest success adds to the string of offensives recently recorded by Nigerian military forces, reinforcing public confidence in the government’s resolve to defeat terrorism and criminality across the country.
