Tragedy struck in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday, as a young woman reportedly committed suicide in protest to her father forcing her to marry one of his friends.
The sad incident was disclosed on Monday by renowned counter-insurgency and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the case.
Makama said the victim, whose identity has yet to be officially released, took her life shortly after the forced wedding arrangement was concluded.
He said credible sources revealed that the incident occurred at about 6:20 pm on Sunday, when the young woman, said to have been under emotional distress, committed suicide following pressure from her family to proceed with the arranged marriage.
A local child protection volunteer identified as Bukar Gubio, also confirmed the incident to Makama, described it as “deeply unfortunate and heartbreaking.”
He explained that the deceased had previously stated clearly, that she did not want to marry the man chosen by her father because she was already in love with someone else.
“The emotional pain and pressure she went through as a result of this forced marriage pushed her into taking her own life.

The report added that Gubio also appealed to parents and community leaders to respect the rights and choices of young women bedore making marital decisions, stressing that forced marriages remain a major violation of human rights.
“This tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need to protect the rights, freedom, and dignity of young women against all forms of abuse and coercion,” he added.
