The All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2023 governorship election in Rivers State, Tonye Cole has announced that he plans to run for Governorship position again.
He disclosed this information during an interview on a Channels Television program on Monday.
Cole expressed his determination to become the governor of Rivers State but emphasized that he is not collaborating with Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. During the interview, Cole stated, “I have never sat with Wike to discuss Rivers politics or governance. I am charting my own course in the APC, and that’s where I stand.”
He asserted that, as the previous candidate for governor, he considers himself the rightful leader of the APC in Rivers State, regardless of Wike’s political affiliation.
When speaking about his political journey, Cole mentioned that Rotimi Amaechi was the one who introduced him to politics, and he respects Amaechi’s choice to pursue his own path, just as Cole is doing.
One of Cole’s main concerns right now is the upcoming local government elections scheduled for August 30. He, along with 21 other stakeholders, has asked President Bola Tinubu to stop the elections. Cole pointed out that there is no properly established electoral commission in the state and highlighted that the required 90-day notice before the elections has not been met.
He also questioned why there is urgency to hold these elections when the current administrator’s term ends in just a month. Cole concluded by saying he plans to run for governor again, asserting that Rivers State deserves better than the current situation.
