President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders, and their supporters in Rivers State to prioritize peace and respect the rule of law amid rising political tensions following last Saturday’s local government election.
The President expressed serious concern over reports of violence, arson, and explosions targeting public facilities, stressing that such actions undermine democracy and stability in the state. In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged all political stakeholders to immediately de-escalate the situation and refrain from further violence.
President Tinubu emphasized that all aggrieved parties should turn to the judiciary to resolve any disputes surrounding the election, rather than resorting to self-help measures that involve damaging public property. “In a democracy that has thrived for 25 years, there is no place for violent self-help tactics,” he stated, urging political actors to guide their supporters towards lawful means of addressing grievances.
He also condemned the reported burning of local government headquarters and other public institutions built with taxpayer funds. “These facilities must be protected, not destroyed,” Tinubu said, underscoring the importance of maintaining peace and order in the state.

In response to the escalating crisis, President Tinubu directed law enforcement agencies to restore peace and ensure the security of public assets in Rivers State. He tasked the police with maintaining law and order, emphasizing that the protection of lives and public infrastructure is non-negotiable.
The President’s call for restraint comes amid growing tensions between rival political factions in the state, particularly following contentious election results. As the crisis unfolds, Tinubu’s message to turn to the courts and avoid violence resonates as a crucial reminder of the judiciary’s role in upholding democratic processes.
