President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Idia Nibukun Ize-Iyamu as the new Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). The appointment will take effect from August 18, 2025, following the completion of the tenure of the outgoing CMD, Professor Darlington Obaseki.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu is a seasoned medical professional whose career at UBTH spans more than twenty-seven years of unbroken service. She joined the hospital in 1997 as a Junior Registrar and steadily rose through the ranks to become an Honorary Consultant in 2005. Over the past eleven years, she served as Head of Department, earning widespread respect for her integrity, deep institutional knowledge, and results-oriented leadership.

A distinguished teacher and mentor, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of countless doctors, many of whom now serve as consultants in Nigeria and in top medical institutions around the world. She is a Commonwealth Fellow and a Craniofacial Orthodontist with world-class training from Oxford University Teaching Hospital in the United Kingdom and the University of Washington, Seattle, in the United States. Her international exposure and global professional networks are expected to introduce cutting-edge medical innovations and best practices to UBTH.

In her current role as Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Benin, Prof. Ize-Iyamu has been recognized as one of the most effective administrators the institution has produced. She has successfully attracted public-private partnerships, mobilized resources to improve infrastructure, enhanced staff welfare, and significantly elevated student training. With over fifty-five publications in reputable local and international journals, she has also contributed meaningfully to evidence-based health policy and research.

Upon assuming office as CMD, Prof. Ize-Iyamu pledged to prioritize people-first healthcare delivery, focusing on modernizing facilities, expanding specialist services, and strengthening institutional accountability. She has outlined a vision that includes technology-driven solutions for efficient patient care, robust community outreach programs, and the establishment of strategic partnerships to ensure that quality medical services are accessible, efficient, and sustainable. Her ambition is to position UBTH as a model teaching hospital in Nigeria, capable of meeting and surpassing international healthcare standards.
