The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has pledged comprehensive legislative support for women and individuals with disabilities, reinforcing their commitment to fostering inclusivity and equality.
During a meeting with the non-governmental organization Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative in Lafia on Thursday, November 14, 2024, Speaker Danladi Jatau highlighted the Assembly’s dedication to ensuring that no one is left behind. “There is ability in disability,” Jatau emphasized, promising to dismantle any barriers that hinder full participation of people with disabilities in state governance.
“Let me assure you that we will leave no stone unturned to guarantee that all persons with disabilities are fully included in our government processes,” he affirmed. “In the eyes of the Lord, we are all equal. I have immense respect for disabled persons, which is why we’ve enacted the Disability Rights Law, and the governor has now established the Disability Rights Commission to safeguard the welfare of disabled individuals in Nasarawa.”

Aliyu Chunbaya, Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, also expressed his appreciation to the NGO, saying, “This House is committed to the welfare of people with disabilities, particularly women, as we recognize the unique challenges they face.”
Kola Jayeoba, Program Manager for the Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative, praised the lawmakers’ efforts in advancing legislation that addresses the needs of women and people with disabilities. He urged for more inclusive policies, particularly in the construction of accessible public facilities and the prioritization of sexual and reproductive health rights for individuals with disabilities.
Ms. Asaba Averson, Nasarawa State Coordinator for the Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative, called for greater societal respect and specialized attention for people with disabilities, underscoring the importance of recognizing their contributions and challenges.
