Super Eagles midfield enforcer Frank Onyeka and defensive stalwart Kevin Akpoguma have emerged as two of the Bundesliga’s standout performers this season, drawing attention from top European clubs, including German giants Bayern Munich.

Onyeka, currently on loan at Augsburg from Brentford, has been a dominant force in midfield, ranking among the Bundesliga’s top tacklers. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim’s Akpoguma has been a model of efficiency in ball distribution, securing his place among the league’s best passers.

According to Euro Football Rumours, Onyeka ranks 27th among the Bundesliga’s top 50 tacklers, with 39 tackles in 22 appearances this season. The 27-year-old Nigerian has logged an impressive 1,842 minutes on the pitch, showcasing his relentless work rate and defensive prowess.

Hoffenheim’s Tom Bischof tops the tackling charts with 81 tackles, while Onyeka’s contributions have solidified Augsburg’s midfield stability. In addition to his defensive duties, Onyeka has provided an assist in both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, further highlighting his all-around capabilities. His stellar performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him a spot in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

On the other hand, Akpoguma has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable passers. The Hoffenheim defender has completed 1,026 passes in 24 league appearances, ranking 40th in the division. Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich leads the passing charts with 2,459 completed passes, but Akpoguma’s consistency has made him a key figure in Hoffenheim’s defense. Despite his strong performances, the 29-year-old has yet to register a goal or assist this season, continuing a dry spell that dates back to the 2021/22 campaign, where he notched two goals and two assists in 26 games.

Recent reports suggest that Bayern Munich is monitoring both Onyeka and Akpoguma as potential summer reinforcements. With Onyeka’s tenacity in midfield and Akpoguma’s composure in defense, a move to the Bundesliga champions could be on the horizon. However, while Onyeka has earned a national team call-up, Akpoguma was surprisingly left out of Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming qualifiers.

As speculation over their futures intensifies, the duo’s performances in Germany could shape their next career moves. Will Bayern Munich make a move for these Super Eagles stars? The coming months will be crucial in determining their next destination.

Nigeria can’t rely on borrowing forever, Finance Minister warns over fresh World Bank loan plans

May 12, 2026
Nigeria can’t rely on borrowing forever, Finance Minister warns over fresh World Bank loan plans By Paul Joseph Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has declared that the country can no longer depend heavily on borrowing to fund national development, insisting that stronger tax reforms and sustainable revenue generation are now critical to the nation’s future. Speaking at the 28th Annual Tax Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria in Abuja, Oyedele said Nigeria must build a resilient fiscal system capable of financing infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and social welfare without excessive reliance on debt. His remarks come amid reports that the Federal Government is seeking a fresh $1.25 billion loan from the World Bank to support economic reforms and job creation initiatives. According to the minister, the government’s ongoing tax reforms are designed to improve fiscal sustainability, attract investment, reduce inequality and stimulate long-term economic growth. Oyedele noted that Nigeria’s tax system has for years been weakened by multiple taxation, poor compliance, fragmented administration and overdependence on a narrow revenue base, making it difficult for government revenues to adequately support development needs. He explained that the proposed reforms aim to simplify taxation, improve fairness and reduce the burden on low- and middle-income earners while creating a more investor-friendly environment. The minister disclosed that minimum wage earners have now been exempted from personal income tax, while plans are underway to reduce company income tax rates in order to encourage business expansion and investment. He added that reforms to the Value Added Tax system are expected to lower operational costs, improve efficiency and help moderate inflationary pressures across the economy. Oyedele further revealed that at least 15 states have already adopted tax harmonisation laws aimed at reducing multiple taxation and easing compliance burdens on businesses operating across the country. Also speaking at the conference, Vice-President Kashim Shettima defended the reforms, describing them as pro-people and pro-business measures intended to strengthen the economy and lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty. Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, also backed the reforms, arguing that wealthy Nigerians and private jet owners should contribute more through taxation to support national development.
