Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas has said there is an urgent need for monarchs, government appointees and elected representatives to collaborate for the development and growth of the South-South region.

Senator Joel-Onowakpo stated this on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 13th Extraordinary General Assembly of the South-South Monarchs Forum at the Unity Hall, Government House Asaba, Delta State.

The Senator, who represented the President of the Senate, His Excellency, God’swill Akpabio as the Special Guest of Honour at the event, noted that until critical stakeholders form a united front and deliberately cooperate for the advancement of South-South, the development in the region will not be commensurate with the huge contributions being made to the national treasury.

He urged government appointees in the region who are occupying vital offices to always liaise with their elected counterparts as well as the monarchs, who he described as the custodians of rich traditional heritage, to positively change the fortune of the region.

“There is a wide gap between the revenue we contribute to the national treasury and the development we have as a region. This is quite disturbing, however, if we must change this ugly narrative, all critical stakeholders in the region especially our revered monarchs, government appointees and elected representatives must deliberately work together,” the Senator said.

While urging the monarchs to appoint a liaison officer who can work closely with both elected and appointed officers, he said the traditional rulers are blessed with divine wisdom and have answers to many of the challenges bedevilling the society.

He commended the Monarchs for forming the South-South Monarchs Forum to forge a united front to project the region, and promote peace, security and development.

The theme of the event was “Strengthening Stakeholder Collaboration for Development in the South-South Region: The Role of the Traditional Institution.”

Earlier, the Delta State Governor, His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, who declared the event open during his welcome address lamented the poor development across the South-South region despite her natural riches. He called on all leaders of the region to be more serious and proactive in advancing the course of the South-South.

Premium Trust Bank To Boost Economic Growth, Create Jobs In Irrua, Says Okpebholo

July 3, 2026
Premium Trust Bank To Boost Economic Growth, Create Jobs In Irrua, Says Okpebholo By Isaac Olamikan, Benin Governor Monday Okpebholo on Friday said the opening of a Premium Trust Bank branch in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, would boost economic growth, expand access to financial services and create employment opportunities for residents. Speaking at the inauguration of the bank's new branch, the Governor and I said the investment marked a significant milestone for Edo Central, which had long lacked a new-generation commercial bank despite its growing commercial activities. "For many years, despite its strategic location and growing commercial activities, Irrua had no new-generation bank. Today, that gap has been closed, and a new chapter of economic growth and opportunity has opened," he said. Governor Okpebholo said Premium Trust Bank's decision to establish a branch in Irrua reflected confidence in the town's economic potential and the business-friendly environment created by his administration. "It is a strong vote of confidence in the economic potential of Irrua and in the business-friendly environment being created by our administration. It affirms that Edo is safe, stable, and open for investment," he added. The Governor said the bank would provide easier access to financial services, support small and medium-sized businesses, create jobs for young people, and stimulate economic activities across the Edo Central district. He commended the bank's management for investing in the community and pledged that the Edo State Government would continue to provide an enabling environment for businesses and investors. Governor Okpebholo also urged residents to support the bank by patronising its services. "I always believed that one day we would have a new-generation bank in my local government, and you have made that dream a reality. Thank you very much. My people will patronise you, and we will continue to open up this area to attract more customers and businesses," he said. The Governor and the Managing Director of Premium Trust Bank, Mr Emmanuel Emefienim, also inaugurated a solar-powered water project at the Irrua Model Market. The project is designed to improve access to clean water, promote public health, and support environmental sustainability. Earlier, Emefienim said the bank's presence in Irrua underscored its commitment to driving economic development in Esanland through increased financial inclusion and employment opportunities.
