Disney’s live-action adaptation of ‘Snow White,’ featuring Rachel Zegler, has been met with considerable backlash and disappointing box office results, earning only $3.5 million in preview earnings in the U.S. Critics have offered mixed reviews, with some calling the film ‘visually repellent’ and ‘exhaustingly awful,’ while others view it as a departure from the beloved 1937 animated classic.
Social media responses, particularly on X(formerly (Twitter) are similarly divided, with some users boycotting the film due to issues with the lead actress or casting choices, and others resorting to sarcasm regarding its commercial and critical failures.
Discussions around Disney’s approach have intensified, particularly concerning the company’s focus on social issues and its potential impact on profitability. A warning issued to investors highlighted the risks involved, further complicated by a revised estimate for the film’s opening weekend, projecting only $43 million—a stark contrast to the estimated production budget of $270 million.
One commenter reflected on how drastically the market for family films has changed since the original ‘Snow White’ was released in 1938.
They noted the diverse entertainment options available today, which challenge the success of a new feature.
The commenter also criticized the choice of lead actress and the overall quality of the film, expressing disappointment over the direction in which Disney seems to be heading, suggesting that even Walt Disney himself would disapprove of the current state of the company.
@ Floridanow1 said “Disney has to know that their wokeness is harming them financially ….why can’t they change?
The Walt Disney Co. warned investors that the corporation’s pursuit of social goals could harm profits.
The company made the disclosure in its Form 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the last fiscal year”.

@Uglycowboy said “Disney revised their Snow White opening weekend estimates lower for investors. $43M breaks through the floor of even the lowest end of the revised estimates. Assuming 2.5 to 3.0 times opening weekend revenues this movie may make around $108M to $129M. Disney spent $270M to make it”.
@ Mooge1974 said “As a grown man I have no interest in this movie and thankfully my kids are older now. But I can’t help thinking the market has changed dramatically since the original.
“My father and his mates all went to see the original in 1938. All of them young soldiers. There wasn’t much else to do where they were and there was a bit of hype around it being a feature length animated movie. In colour!”
One of the guys in the unit wanted to become an animator. They all ended up with the seven dwarves painted on the top of their helmets. They caught hell for that.
Today, in the age of streaming, with so many options out there it’s a punishment to make a successful movie. There is nothing technically interesting about this film. The odds were against it from the start. To put a lead with such a vocal and shitty attitude up there to sell it was a bold move. To make it so white as well? Disney, what happened to you? Walt would turn in his grave”.
