The Rotary Club of Ubeji, District 9141, has taken a bold step in tackling poverty and promoting inclusivity in Delta State by launching a skills acquisition program that empowered people with disabilities (PWDs) alongside other community residents.
The two-week training, held at the Bertrand Skill Acquisition Center, focused on equipping participants with practical skills to foster entrepreneurship and financial independence. A total of 54 individuals successfully completed the program, which covered five specialized skills.
Speaking on the initiative, Rtn. Emmanuel Etsano, President of the Rotary Club of Ubeji, emphasized the program’s mission to open entrepreneurial doors and reduce poverty in the community. While participation was limited due to a rigorous selection process, Etsano explained that this approach ensured only genuinely passionate and committed individuals were chosen.
Unlike other programs that provide starter packs to participants, the Rotary Club opted out of this practice to prevent misuse, citing instances where previous beneficiaries sold the materials for quick cash. Instead, the club is exploring other ways to offer sustained support to participants.

Etsano urged the graduates to fully utilize their newly acquired skills both commercially and domestically, highlighting the potential for these abilities to transform their lives and contribute to their communities.
The program also marked a groundbreaking effort by the Rotary Club to include people with disabilities. Mrs. Jane Orhewere, Lead Facilitator and Founder of the Bertrand Skill Acquisition Center, lauded the club for its innovative and inclusive approach. She praised the resilience and determination of the PWD participants, describing their success as a testament to their ability to overcome challenges.
The ceremony culminated in the presentation of certificates to the graduates. Many beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Club for creating a platform that promotes inclusivity and empowers marginalized groups.
The Rotary Club of Ubeji has set a new standard for community engagement, with beneficiaries calling for the continuation of such impactful initiatives to ensure broader access to opportunities for all.
