The Chairman of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, Retired Justice, Adolphus Enebeli on Tuesday assured that the October 5th, 2024 local government Council elections in the state would hold as scheduled.
The RSIEC chairman gave the assurance at the on ongoing training of Master Trainers for RSIEC Staff holding at Justice Mary Odili Institute in Port Harcourt.
Enebeli cited the state electoral law and the recent judgement of the Supreme Court saying those instruments empower the Commission to conduct the scheduled elections.
He also clarified that there is no court judgment or any other impediment against the conduct of the elections.
The RSIEC boss restated that RSIEC as the electoral umpire in the state is “fully ready and prepared for the conduct of the elections on the October, 5th, 2024.”

On the training for the RSIEC Staff, Justice Enebeli described the exercise as an investment that would help the electoral process have integrity.
He also reminded the Master trainers that their role was to train the RSIEC ad-hoc staff and other electoral officers, assuring that the commission was determined for a free, fair, credible and violence free election.
The chairman regretted that the ten days nationwide hunger protest affected the timetable of the election, adding that out of the nineteen registered political patties, eighteen political parties are participating in the elections with over three hundred candidates cleared to contest in various positions.
He also assured that names of contestants who scaled through the screening would be published from today 24th of September, 2024.
