The House of Representatives has confirmed an ongoing police investigation following the discovery of a decomposed body in a vehicle parked around the National Assembly Complex on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
In a statement signed by the House spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the House clarified details surrounding the grim incident, while urging the public to remain calm and avoid speculation.
According to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), National Assembly Division, the deceased, believed to be a labourer at a construction site within the National Assembly complex, was discovered around 9:00 a.m. inside a red Peugeot 406 with registration number BWR-577 BF.
The car was parked close to the annex building gate, near the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.
The body, found in a sleeping position on the back seat, was already in an advanced state of decomposition.
Police operatives immediately evacuated the remains to a mortuary, with efforts now underway to establish the deceased’s identity and notify next of kin.
The House emphasized that it is in close contact with relevant security and emergency agencies to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

“The leadership of the House considers it a duty to keep the public properly informed to prevent speculation and misinformation,” Rep. Rotimi said.
He commended the police for their swift response and assured Nigerians that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The House also extended its condolences to the family and associates of the deceased once formally identified.
The discovery sparked concerns among visitors and staff of the National Assembly, with security around the legislative complex further tightened.
While the police have yet to rule out foul play, preliminary information suggests the incident may not be linked to any direct threat to lawmakers or the institution.
