Reactions have continued to trail the removal of campaign billboards featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso in Edo State, with supporters questioning why the NDC materials were taken down, while the state signage agency insists the boards were removed because they had not been regularised.

Key Highlights

  • Reactions mount after Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso campaign billboard is removed in Edo.
  • Residents reportedly confronted officials during an earlier attempt to remove the billboard.
  • EDSARA says the campaign materials were not properly regularised.
  • NDC candidate Frank Uyi Omosigho alleges wider attacks on opposition campaign materials.
  • Social media users accuse authorities of targeting the opposition.
  • The signage agency has not publicly released details showing which political billboards were approved.
  • Debate intensifies over political campaigning and signage regulations ahead of 2027.

Reactions Grow Over Edo Billboard Removal

The removal of the billboard featuring Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and NDC candidate Frank Uyi Omosigho has triggered heated reactions on social media, with supporters questioning the motive behind the action.

The controversy intensified after residents reportedly prevented an earlier attempt by officials to remove the billboard in Oredo. When the task force returned on October 7, 2026, the campaign material was eventually taken down.

While the state signage agency says the billboard was not regularised, critics have questioned whether signage regulations are being applied equally to political parties.

‘Why Should Political Billboards Be Removed?’

One of the reactions came from X user @PO_GrassRootM, who shared footage of the earlier confrontation between residents and officials.

The user questioned why the NDC campaign material was being targeted and argued that political parties should be allowed to operate and express themselves peacefully within the law.

The reaction reflects a wider debate among opposition supporters, who see the removal as potentially restricting the visibility of Peter Obi, Kwankwaso and the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, social media reactions do not independently establish that the billboard was removed for political reasons.

Edo Task Force Returns to Remove Billboard

The controversy escalated when the Edo State task force reportedly returned on October 7 with additional personnel and removed the same billboard featuring Omosigho, Obi and Kwankwaso.

X user @JamesBem724681 documented the return visit, saying the task force had been reinforced before removing the campaign material.

The development has generated further debate over whether the action was simply regulatory enforcement or part of a broader political dispute in Edo State.

EDSARA Gives Reason for Removal

An official of the Edo State Signage and Advertising Agency, EDSARA, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the billboard was removed because its placement had not been regularised.

The official reportedly advised the owners to visit the agency, settle the required fees and comply with the relevant regulations.

EDSARA has not publicly released a detailed list showing which political billboards in the affected areas were approved or unauthorised.

NDC Alleges Selective Enforcement

Omosigho has described the billboard removals as an escalation of alleged attacks on NDC campaign materials across Oredo.

He alleged that posters and billboards were also removed or damaged around Stadium Road, Oguola, Oliha, Five Junction and Ekenwan Road.

He further alleged that campaign materials at his Stadium Road office were destroyed during a night incident in late September.

According to Omosigho, the incident was reported to the police at Eyan Police Station, while the Commissioner of Police and DSS were also informed.

The allegations have not been independently established.

The Political Question Behind the Billboard Dispute

The controversy has now moved beyond the question of whether the billboard had the required permit.

While EDSARA maintains that the enforcement was based on signage regulations, the NDC and some of its supporters believe the action could be politically motivated.

The key question now is whether the same regulations are being applied consistently to campaign materials belonging to the APC and other political parties operating in Oredo.

Until EDSARA provides clearer information on the permit status of the affected billboards and demonstrates how the rules are being applied across political parties, the dispute over whether the removals were regulatory or politically motivated is likely to continue.
